Ft Pulaski – Tybee Island

01-28-2025

This monument is right outside the Tybee Island area. We drove past it daily. Its had a long history and was first a defensive fort protecting the port, then became a prison housing over 600 confederate officers and soldiers.

Its a massive brick structure and used amazing architectural arches to build the main walls of the fort. Cannon placements lined the upper decks of the walls, requiring them to be massive and heavy. Being built on basically sandy swamp, special supports were driven deep below the walls to create a solid foundation.

The holes in the outer walls are real, and were made by cannon fire from Tybee Island batteries when the fort was taken over by Union forces. Some of the holes still hold the original cannon ball.
